I post this here, too because I don't know if you can read the "Buchclub" threads:
Did anyone of you read Ken Follet's "The Columns of Earth" in English? I think it is about architecture so I wonder if there are many technical terms in the book?
Since so many people told me it is a great book I decided to give a try. Seems to be the right kind of book to take to a little cabin in the middle of the Finnish nowhere![]()

Are you talking about 'Pillars of the earth'? I think I read it in English (as I prefer to read all my books in English). But I cant't remember if there were many technical terms in it. But I don't think so. I just read 'World without end' where one of the main characters is a decendant from one of the characters of 'Pillars of the earth'. I didn't have any problems understanding the book.
pillars, of course!

Not my day today ...![]()
Haven't touched a Follet in years. The only one I read bored me to tears, so I didn't even finish it. But if I remember correctly, it was quite easy to read. But I say the same about "Gödel, Escher, Bach"...![]()

Hi girls,
today is a beautiful day to have a little chat about the weather: It is very warm and sunny, true "get-the-little-summer-skirts-out"-weather. I love it!
But I just had a look at the weather forecast for Finland where we will go on holiday in four weeks time: It is so cold there!Only 9 °C!
But still, I am looking forward to our trip. I can't wait to see all the lakes and stay in a small cottage in the middle of nowhere! Also, I am very curious about the daylight. It won't get dark at all, can you imagine? And I'm really addicted to daylight - summer is my season!![]()
Hello ladies!
Lovely sunny searing hot day hereI wanted to take Gran to the swimming pool in the next village... but they only open on June 1!
And everybody knows it rains in Hungary in June :-P
By the way, there´s a 10 million Euro jackpot in the Austrian lottery tomorrow night, ladies... holy moly, I don´t play usually but this is just too tempting! (and it only costs a fraction of a MAC refill anyway)

Well, it's warmish, but not sunny. I don't mind, because I'm not too fond of too much sun and heat. And I don't wear little summer skirts...
OK, but I'd love to see the midnight sun. That must be great, I guess.

Even in Scotland was a hint of midnight sunIt got dark at eleven in the night and the sun rose at about 3 or 4 in the morning. It was pretty weird because usually you don't think of short nights when you think of Scotland
On the other hand the winter is pretty dull

Yeah, that's true. I almost got lost while riding in Scotland in winter. An experience I'm not eager to repeat, I can tell you. Thank God for clever dogs and horses, I say.![]()

Hey lovely ladies!
Just discovered this nice thread!
I guess you'll meet me here again.![]()
It's not a fashion statement, it's a deathwish.
btw: Why is everyone sad today? Nova_Heart, Sucre ...
Me, I am just a litte jazzed today![]()
i'm actually bored a little today. being at home on maternity leave turns out to be quite a drag, really... and it's only my first week! i know now, why all the mums to be are waiting so keenly for their babies - being on maternity leave is a big bore most of the time.
even though i'm not doing nothing - i cleaned a little and tidied the apartment, since next week a midwife is going to come and introduce herself and i want to make a good impression. i also painted a wooden cat for the babies room. other than that i did nothing really productive except taking a shower, getting dressed and made up and so on. in the afternoon i will go to the doctor and window shopping in the city.
When I was at home on maternity leave I did sleep a lot. I was so absolutely tired and as I had problems sleeping at night I slept at daylight.
And when I was bored I wrote letters to my baby in which I told the baby that I was really looking forward to having it. I wonder what happend to those letters.Actually they where full of nonsense but also kind of funny.

@lavee73: Hello from and to Munich!Hm
When I think of maternity leave I would imagine it being rather nice – having a few more weeks all for your own before a new person enters your life
But anyway, should I ever have a baby I will probably not enjoy the maternity leave either because no one will pay for it
– I am a freelancer
Please keep us posted about the "Butz"!
@MoneSi: Oh, that sounds so sweet, writing letters to your baby! You should give them to your child one day! How old is he/she now?
oh, i write a diary to the baby and i did write more than 5 pages in it today. i'm not sure, when the baby will be able to fully grasp all that i write down in there, but i guess it's a nice memory of the pregnancy.
i, too, sleep a lot. i go to bed rather late and sleep rather badly, so i take naps throughout the day in front of the tv.
i would go out more if it wasn't so hot - my ankles look like elephant's feetbecause of the heat. i thought of going to the public pool, but then again i can't be bothered. i don't fancy lying there on the ground and having difficulties getting up. also, people stare a lot. in the subway, at the public pool probably even more... but if the heat stays, i might just as well see what it's like.
i can't really go shopping for baby things, as i bought most of the stuff we need already. i don't want to buy nappies and baby's cosmetics yet, and the other stuff we still need, i want to buy together with my husband who isn't in munich during the week.
i'll keep you posted, though...
bilby, what kind of freelance work do you do? i used to work freelance as a translator but then got tired of working alone from home...
lavee
you're a translator – that's interesting! I am a "language worker", too but not with foreign languages – I'm an editor. But not for fancy novels or poetrySometimes I have to work together with translators if the project is originally from Britain or the US.
I like freelancing; but I have to say that I spent one or two days a week in an office where I am a "regular freelancer". So it is a nice mix of having people around and being on your own. Freelancing gives you a lot of freedom, but, of course, a lot of responsibility (and sometimes panic), too. Never say never, but at this time, I see no reason to give it up.
By the way, I am not going to the public pool, either because it is so packed with people! But I'm full of good intentions to go there for a swim next Friday at 7 a. m.– it is the only day in the week that they open so early.
Have a nice day!![]()
Not only sad today, Bilby. Today, it's especially bad - my Dad died last year all of a sudden and today is his birthday. Mine was last week and normally we'd have a party this weekend to celebrate both birthdays. So I think the whole family will be sad for quite a while longer, as we still can't understand that he's not there anymore.
And now to something completely different...
We're back from Berlin. Had a good time although it was much too warm. Especially the concert was terribly hot and stuffy as it was not an open air show but inside. But still, it was a great show apart from the support act - some kind of DJ bloke. Technically he was brilliant but the stuff he played was way out, some kind of electro-house, which really annoyed the audience. So much in fact, that they booed and held up their tickets. Not something you expect to see from people way beyond their 30s...![]()

Concert? Who was on stage (besides the support act)?
It's not a fashion statement, it's a deathwish.
Frl. Sucre, we were at the Yazoo Show in Berlin - one of the two only shows in Germany. Apart from the support act it was a great show. She still is among the most beautiful voices in pop music. And is dressed much better today than she was in the eary 80s *lol*.

Hi Bilby
maybe it's too late now? Have you gone to your Finnish cabin yet?Bellabina
Anyway: "The Pillars of the Earth" is a wonderful book. I've read it during my holiday in Corfu that ended a few minutes ago![]()
There are indeed quite a few architecture words, but these are those that I don't know in German, either (all the parts of a church), and it does no harm not to know them..
Since I've found the book very intriguing, I will find out some of their meanings - in both languages.
Sorry, I'm not very able right now.. But I hope my accumulation of words makes sense, somehow

Have a wonderful Sunday

Hi Sowka
I bought the book last week and will read it in my Finnish cabin![]()
hi guys,
i went to a meeting of the international women's club munich today. i was a little late as i head an appointment at my gynaecologist at 10 and the meeting started at 10 as well. the butz is fine, by the way, coming along perfectly. the doc said she can come any time now, because she's ready and fully developed. what happens from now on is, that she gains more weight and gets bigger and stronger.
my hubby took me to the meeting afterwards and i was in time for the speech of some guy from the european parliament, which was sort of boring - nothing new to me, really. but after that i had the opportunity to speak to some of the women and two other expecting moms, which was nice. i will go to the new members café next monday, too, and maybe to a meeting of the mothers group (a group for expecting moms and mothers with little children) on tuesday. i really enjoyed speaking english and i am looking forward to the meeting next week. the next club meeting will be on my due date, so i won't be able to go, plus it's an evening thing instead of the usual morning meeting and the speaker is an astronomer, because the estee lauder representative cancelled. who gives a **** about astronomy, when an estee lauder representative would have been the alternative? i don't... i might actually have gone there ON my due date (since the hospital is only about 500m from the place, where the meetings are)... but no such luck.
Hi lavee
oh, the butz is a little girl- I bet she will become a cute little beautyjunkie!
I will keep the International Women's Club in mind and will go to one of the "open" meetings but I have to admit that I would prefer the Estee Lauder representative, too
Are you having the baby in the Rechts der Isar hospital? I could wave to you from my balcony but I guess you won't be in the mood for waving back![]()
yes, that's right - it's a girl, she's going to be a little beauty junkie and i will give birth at the rechts der isar. so if i see a woman waving from across the street i'll wave back and know that was you!
OK, I'm the odd one out - I'd want the astronomer for sure. The universe is such a deeply fascinating place: Did you know it's singing? That you can look back in time? That it's still expanding? That at the heart of a galaxy lies a black hole? If I wasn't made into such a klutz in natural science due to stupid teachers that would have been my profession for sure.

Sorrry for sneaking in, but i have one question. What does "meine meist geliebten mac artikel" mean in english? My most loved MAC items?

Hi everybody
the other day, while I was searching the LEO dictionary for some serious words, I found a thread .. I've forgotten the title, but I do remember one posting that spoke about a funny thing:
While the poster travelled on the train or tube, someone sitting opposite him/her was reading a book with an incredible title. I've just found out that this book really exists: BARF
But I have to admit that I found the meaning of these four letters, arranged in that particular manner, only after having read that story..
Cheers
Sowka
PS: Oh, I've found the thread, tooLEO-Forum. There are many nice examples of machine translation confusions etc ..

Oh, what a nice Thread! I'm so into English right now, sometimes it's hard to find the right german word. Why is that so?
Im currently watching Dr House in english (well, we, me and my boyfriend, just finished season two) an reading "Eclipse" by Stephenie Meyer. Too much english inplug for my brain, so it switched in the "english mode", having problems switching back to german.![]()
